Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas will launch the first community sponsorship program in the greater Kansas City area. With 13 churches, nonprofit organizations, and community groups already identified as having interest in the program, the agency is poised to accomplish its goals of increased community engagement; increased agency capacity; building grassroots level advocacy; and increased cultural and community integration for refugee families.
"Even as restrictions on refugee resettlement tightened in recent years, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas saw a surge in volunteer interest. Now that arrival numbers are expected to increase over the next few years, we are excited to tap into that volunteer energy and help build a more active community by creating allies and advocates through our Community Sponsorship volunteers."
"Community Sponsorship is a collaboration among our agency, community volunteer groups, and the refugee family that helps facilitate the family’s adjustment to a new community. By building relationships, this work opens doors for helping families to build new lives and impact their communities, and it encourages volunteer groups to become advocates for resettlement."
"CSCF’s support gives Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas the capacity to develop the community sponsorship program we have been wanting to create. In developing the first community sponsorship model in the greater Kansas City area, we look forward to sharing our experience with area partners and with the greater Catholic Charities resettlement community across the country."
